Following a serious orthopaedic injury, a referral for an occupational therapy assessment and assistance with discharge planning is frequently sought. The occupational therapist may see the client in the hospital to determine recommendations from the inpatient team and to determine the client’s functional status in order to facilitate the provision of safety, mobility and accessibility equipment for the home. An assessment of attendant care needs is provided as needed. In-home physiotherapy may be necessary in the initial period following hospital discharge dependent on the client’s mobility status. Ongoing intervention by occupational therapy and physiotherapy is provided to progress the client’s resumption of pre-accident home and physical activities. Should trauma or adjustment present as problems, a referral to social work can be facilitated.
Discrete orthopaedic injuries such as sports injuries, sprains and strains, rotator cuff injuries etc. are seen in our physiotherapy clinic.
